I believe Luke Wroblewski did usability studies on radio button display, back in 2008 or so. I can't seem to quickly find the articles I remember, so perhaps it's in his book, Web Form Design: Filling in the Blanks (See http://www.lukew.com/resources/web_form_design.asp) (A colleague had this book, but she left and so did the book, so I can't check.)
