to use JavaScript or not

I noticed that a college that specialises in retraining adults with all
sorts of disabilities offers students courses in JavaScript. Is it just me
or does this seem a bit out of place in such a situation? I thought that
JavaScript had to be handled very carefully so that it did not make things
like menus inaccessible to those who only use a keyboard.
I know they do not get a very high proportion of blind students because they
tend to go to educational establishments that specialise in supporting
students with visual impairment. However I would have thought that they
would have had more consideration than most on the difficulties faced by
anyone with any kind of impairment.
JavaScript was one of those things that was not very high on my list of
things to learn because I thought it could hinder accessibility. Other
things came much higher up the list and therefore were tackled as part of
the extra learning I have done to supplement my degree course. Well they
don't teach you everything you need to know to do the job properly the rest
you have to find ways of learning for yourself.
