exactly what would you envision in for PDFs in this regard? Why not use a link?
The longdesc attribute as defined for HTML runs the risk of hiding the longdesc-referenced content from certain groups of users. If longdesc simply were an ordinary link, labeled something like "Detailed explanation of Figure 3", and point to the same target as longdesc would - what would be lost? What I do know for sure is that due to the reduced discoverabilty of longdesc it is inferior to simply using a link.
