I haven't found a perfect menu. I like the Adobe Mega menu (http://adobe-accessibility.github.io/Accessible-Mega-Menu/) but it's not perfect. For example, when you open the menu nothing is indicated by the screen reader. Pressing enter on the expanded menu doesn't close it but takes you to the page link. Escape does close the menu though.

There is also no good way to indicate aria-selected on a navigation link with the current specification as aria-selected can't be used on role link. So, all I'm saying is that despite an excellent ARIA specification there are practical implementation problems that need to be figured out for navigation structures. I.e. you can use the menu roles and all of the baggage associated with it or you are left with list and list items in nav element but without use of aria-haspopup or aria-selected or other attributes that are not allowed on links. The protocols and formats working group ARIA task force is working to draft ARIA 1.1. so I hope some of these concerns can be addressed.
