Dan,
A long description is necessary to describe that map. If the map is updated to show if certain paths are blocked due to snow, then some announcement can be provided. That way the long description stays the same describing the map, but the announcement falls before the amp in the DOM stating that: "The Path from the engineering school to the science school is blocked today due to snow."
Something like that would help tremendously.

Subject: [WebAIM] accessible snow walks
Our university has a network of priority sidewalks ('snow walks') which are cleared first during snow storms. Unfortunately, the existing maps are not accessible to anyone with a visual impairment. The maps are just a bird's eye view of parts of campus with certain paths highlighted.
Does anyone have or has anyone come across anything like this that is accessible for someone that is visually impaired?
Thanks!
