A bit late in the discussion (was on vacation), but I usually refer to this
blog when talking about accessible footnotes. It has some nice ideas.

Unfortunately, the examples they show are images instead of real code.

I had modified the examples in the blog so that I could have two different
questions point to the same footnote and the "back" from the footnote would
go back to the appropriate place.
