Thanks, Mallory, for the example. In the meantime, I stumbled across a
solution that works in JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver/Safari. VoiceOver/Chrome
is still is as problematic as expected.

What I ended up doing was to remove the button role on the wrapper div (but
left the tabindex) and replace the clickable div that came after the
answer's mathml with a span with an aria-role of switch. Interesting how
that works when the role-button fails, but I'll take it.
