toast-style notifications

Hi All,
I recently listened to a Syntax podcast that mostly focused on "toast" style popup notifications in Web apps. I was glad that they mentioned that developers should not try to convey information just with color. But, in general, they made no mention of accessibility Issues. The show did make me curious. I presume an accessible notification from the server involves putting the information in an aria-alert block
Beyond that, I would guess there are many other requirements for making a toast notification accessible. Could someone summarize this and possibly provide a link to an example.
