I hate it because what I hear is something like

home virtical bar, garage, birtical bar, sidewalk, virtical bar

and I get annoyed hearing about virtical bar after virtical bar.At 06:49 AM

how about &#8226; (& # 8226 ;), which is a middle
aligned dot. would that be acceptable? how does that
get read out by a screenreader?

in the same context: what's the best way to go with
breadcrumb separation. i've noticed that > often gets
read out as 'greater than'. i tend to prefer a colon
to separate breadcrumb links for just that reason,
although usability recommends >.

home : section : page
rather than
home > section > page
