If this is a serious project, why not make it look a bit more
professional and put it on a web page where survey results can be
recorded (this suvey looks confusing and like very little work went
into it)?
What is RS, I have no idea what currency it is, please use currency
appropriate to the audience.
I do not think creating some specific device just for the blind is the
way to go, and I have problems seeing this kind of device having all
these features as well as being low cost. Also keyboard and large
screen together will make the device too large, in my opinion.
Much better to modify existing phone and put efforts into one of the
Android screen readers, for instance.
There is no need to reinvent the wheel, plus it is costly.
I think what is missing today is a very low cost, very simple phone
that is not a smart phone and people can use to make phone calls, use
caller id and, may be, texting, nothing else. Elderly folks would
benefit and want this, plus developing country people who really do
need an affordable, accessible device.
eSpeak is free, open source, and fairly decent quality, so porting it
to an inexpensive phone platform would be a simple and effective
solution.
For the other stuff you asked for, the iPhone is perfect, it need one
or two extra buttons to simplify very basic operations, like answering
a phone call, but apart from that they've done an excellent job and
have all the features I can think of in a great package.
Thanks

Hi,
This was just a first cut of information gathering. So I did not put it online.
And really sorry for using "RS" for currency. RS stands for "Indian National Rupee"
Anyways thanks for your response.
Thanks

I have to agree. I'm not even gonna try to fill out the survey using a
screen reader; it would be much easier on a website. And in my
opinion, all anyone needs to do is look at the iPhone and maybe do
that with a tactual phone. A non smart phone would be awesome, but one
anyone can use, not just us. To me, that would be much more cost
effective to make the sighties' phones work for us as well.
~Randi and Guide Dog Jayden
For me, acceptance was the first step towards recovery.

Perhaps I show ignorance here but wouldn't it make sense to take mobile
phones and have software usable for those who drive, who insist they need
their phones but illegally text etc? This should them make them more easily
used by those who have other disabilities. I admit I didn't look at the
survey.
I have a commitment with a carrier who, it appears is somewhat behind the
times as far as accessible phones to begin with, and I keep hoping because
for me it's the most reasonable I've found, that they'll catch up. I
thought that might be the case when I purchased my BlackBerry Bold 9700,
however, either i don't know enough about the phone or it's not completely
usable for me as a totally blind user. If someone here has knowledge that
might help me, and, oh yes, patience to help, please contact me offlist as
I'd be absolutely delighted.

Hi Shrirang,
Is Infosys planning to build such a phone?

Hi Varun,
At present, we are only trying to understand
If this kind of device is required or not.
Plan to build such a device will make sense if and only if it is required.
Pls note:
The target user group is only Indian population of visually challenged and elderly.
This is the online survey you may fill up if you are amongst the target users.

Thanks

Shrirang.
Good to see this survey moved to a wb-baed site, much easier to access.
As for U.S. market, with a commitment to a career you can get the
iPhone for $200, you can waive the $15 a mont data plan if you wish
and pay no more than you would with any other phone. At this price
range I think it's impossible to beat with any "for the blind" phone.
Generally, I believe building such a sophisticated phone for the blind
would be a waste or resources, and it definitely goes against the
European and, to a large extent, U.S. attitude of inclusive design and
existance, that blind people use the same devices and technology as
their sighted counterpart, and those be made accessible, rather than a
separate technology and solution be developed for them.
I'll state again though, my perception that a simple "not so smart"
phone could be a very viable solution, provided it is inexpensive,
super eay so use and does very few things but does them well.
This is something that definitely is needed in the developing
countries, but I know quite a few people both in Europe and the U.S.
who would benefit.
I'd suggest an abslute maximum price point of $120 or so for such a phone.
But, this is my last post to this topic, as I am no expert, and this
is marginally, I think, outside its topic.
Hope the feedback is worth something, good luck with the survey and
with building A.T. products in general.
