Hello,
Would it be possible for some screen reader users to tell me if it is possible (and practical) to navigate to the content that is in the expanding content areas on this page? http://sbctc.edu/college/f_tuitionwaivers.aspx . I doubt if they are accessible by screen readers as I can't seem to tab to them.

The first expanding area is entitled "Mandatory Waivers". Inside that expanding content area are links to 4 other web pages. These are the 4 link labels inside the expanded content.

Children and Spouse of Totally Disabled or POW/MIA or Deceased Eligible Veterans or National Guard Members<http://sbctc.edu/college/_f-tuitionwaivers_childofdisableddeceasedpow.aspx>;

Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Law Enforcement Officers or Firefighters <http://sbctc.edu/college/_f-tuitionwaivers_childofdeceasedlawenforcemt.aspx>; (NEW CHANGES IN 2010)

Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (Inactive) <http://sbctc.edu/college/_f-tuitionwaivers_waawardforvocexcellence.aspx>;

Washington Scholars (Inactive)<http://sbctc.edu/college/_f-tuitionwaivers_washingtonscholars.aspx>;

Thank you very much.

Using Voiceover with Snow Leopard and Safari, I hear a heading titled, "Mandatory Waivers"

Then I heard that it's a visited link, but the only page I visited is the first link you provided. The visited link sounds like, "f_tuitionwaivers.aspx".

Then under a heading level four it says, "optional waivers" and then the same visited link.

Each heading has that same visited link. I don't use tab with VO, just arrow keys.

Headings after this read, "
Waiver of Nonresident Tuition Differential" and so on.

Referencing your email, I definitely don't hear anything you said would be in the first expanding area.

I tried group order when navigating in Safari just to see if anything showed up, but nothing did, and nothing in form controls either.

Hope that helps; I'm just a regular Jane Shmo Mac user. :)

Ro

You know, I just looked at my link choser out of curiosity and there are forty-five items. That visited link I mentioned? It comes up in the link chooser with a number next to it, 1-8. I tried clicking on that visited link, which I should have done before replying, and it seems to expan the material. I now here what you included in the first email.

There's nothing to indicate a menu expanded, so if you didn't know it was there, you'd think nothing happened.

Sorry this is so scattered; I'm tired and should not be trying to test anything. Though maybe that just makes me more of an average user. ;)

Hi Angela,

Yes, using Firefox 11 Nightly and NVDA 2011.3 RC1, it’s very possible
and practical to navigate to and activate content that is in the
expanding content areas.
I CTRL+ENTER on:
http://sbctc.edu/college/f_tuitionwaivers.aspx
which opened it in a new FF tab;
h (move to next heading) to "Mandatory Waivers";
DOWN will move into expanding area, read the various links/labels, and
it’s possible to press ENTER to go to the website.

Hi,

Using JAWS 12 and IE7, I found Mandatory Waivers, but it was not a tabbable link. I did discover that there appears to be a link with no link text that shows up just previous to each of the menus here. So if I hit enter on the empty link previous to Mandatory Waivers, I can then find the 4 other links you mention.

Hope this helps.

Coutney,
On a scale of 1-10 for user experience (1 being low), would you be so kind as to rate its difficulty of use with JAWS 12 (at least the way you did it)?

Hi Angela,
I just tested in windows xp with keyboard access only (can't forget those
folks), no screenreader. Worked ok in IE 8 and FF 8. Keyboard access did
not work in Chrome 8.
I had an issue with knowing the current location of the keyboard focus. In
FF it was a 1 px dot to the upper right of the open/close icon, In IE it
was a thick 2-3 px thick vertical bar above and to the left of the icon.

Well, I guess I'd give it a 5. The content is there and accessible via the keyboard, but I had to guess at which link would activate it. If I'd visited the page without knowing I was supposed to look for a way to expand those areas, I might have just found the empty links and not bothered with them.

Sounds like it works better in other browsers. Lately, I've been finding that to be true with more and more sites.

I'm probably going to get rid of those expanding content areas. I really don't see the point. The area inside is not that long (for sighted users), you can't open them all at once for printing purposes (though that may be editable in the javascript). If content editors have such long pages that they need them, I personally think they should consider re-architecting their page for a better user experience for everyone. Determining what to do with this page (and others that use the script) is one of the phases in cleaning up this site.

Thanks,

Hi Angela:
Using Jaws 12 and IE8 I was able to move to the headings and expand
them by pressing enter. I would not have known to do this if I had not
read your e-mail. I also noticed a number of links which were titled
college. once I expanded the heading, I could tab to and see the links
within the section I expanded. When I listed the links using the Jaws
links list functionality, the links within the section appeared only
after I expanded the section. Therefore if I don't know enough to
expand the section I will not have access to the links within that
section.

I noticed as well that when I moved to the next expandible heading,
that expanding that heading also caused the previously expanded section
to be collapsed. I only noticed this because I was looking at the
screen at the time. I would not have expected this to happen.

Oh, sorry, I did not even realize I could hit enter on the heading
text itself to expand it.
Yes, this works with Jaws 13 and IE9, though once you do it, the focus
is set to the previous link i.e. "college" right above the "mandaotory
waivers" heading.
I'd have to essentially give this layout a 0, not becausae it is not
accessible, once you know what to do, but because you have to really
think outside the box to even try to hit enter on a typical heading
that appears to be a perfectly normal text.
It is kind of like having a perfectly fnctioning screen reader for,
say, some Windows application, which can only be started with the
mouse or with a secret key combination that is not listed anywhere.
Possible solutions include explanatory text (hit enter on headings to
expand that heading), or some creative use of ARIA to indicate that
the text is "expandable", not sure it exists, would definitely like to
see someone inform us about it.
See also previous idea on a listbox.
Cheers and good luck.

Thank you all for your testing. Are you aware of other JS implementations of expanding divs that is more accessible/intuitive? I know content editors are going to moan if I say we can't have expanding content areas any longer.

Angela,

You could use ARIA and add the required roles and attributes to the div elements. You could use and modify the accordion widget guidelines from the WAI-ARIA Authoring practices 1.0:

http://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria-practices/#accordion .

This would eliminate the need for the blank link. However, ARIA is not completely supported by all browsers and assistive technology.

This might be a really good demo to add to either the BAD webdemo or
some "good practical uses of area" .. once implemented of course.
