Thank you. I often use the list links feature in JAWS and then sort
alphabetically. If all the links have been label "Link to...", all the
links start with the letter "L" which makes this feature not useable.

How do you know when an image is a link -- does Jaws do that for you?
It seems then that the ALT tag of an image should still describe the
link, just not say "Link to ...". So:
"Link to home page" becomes "Home page"
"Link to Microsoft.com" becomes "Microsoft.com"
??

Just thought of something that may have relevance to your issue. If ALL
the links started with "Link to ..." or with "[" then theoretically the
list would still be alphabetical. But some links will be from HTML text
and some will come from image ALT tags -- correct? So you might get:
Home
About us
Link to Custard (from an image ALT)
Link to Rhubarb (from an image ALT)
Zoology
Is this correct? If so then the technique of differentiating ALT text by
enclosing it in square brackets "[]" is also not viable because of it's
impact on the alphabetical sorting.

It is not the visual alphabetical sorting that is the problem. It is the
first letter navigation of the list that we all can use, whether with a
screen reader or not. If the alt text [Home Page] appears, "H" will not hit
that link. Same for "Link to Home Page."
