Subject: Request for Ideas: Health and Wellness Products and Services for Disabled Users

All:

As some of you know, I work for a large health insurance company. Recently,
our product team sent out an internal request for ideas to improve our
overall products and services that we offer to our members in the future. I
loved that they chose to crowd source this, and I decided that I should do
likewise and ask the WebAIM list the same question. I'll take your ideas
and incorporate them into a submission on behalf of the accessibility team
for their 2013 product planning sessions.

What innovative products or services could a health and wellness company
offer to disabled users to make life easier?


I really appreciate any feedback you give.

There's a site I used to recommend, but I am drawing a blank, Enable
Mart (http://www.enablemart.com/) is a similar site. You can maybe use
that for ideas?

Since this is already off topic, lol.
Pedometer with talking pulse measurement and auto-timer would make
working out a lot easier and more enjoyable.
(I know there are some iPhone apps for this with bluetooth, but quite
frankly I do not want to take a bulky and expensive thing like my
iPhone to the gym).
I've always wanted a gps-enabled device like a writeband that can help
me orient in open water swimming or walking across a large pitch
(receiver or gps co-ordinates (accurate within, say, 30 feet) used as
a starting point, but then I can somehow associate vibrations on part
of the wrist band to that "beacon" or location and know which
direction it is in (would be wonderful for open water swimming and
marathongs).
Of course we could also think up some online products. ;)
Back on topic, but I just had to have some fun with this.

Hi Elle,

Greetings!

I have two answers of your query first if you are seeking about the
supportive products or best alternatives of accessibility support then I
think you have to go with Ryan, this portal provide you a good idea.
But if usability of your health insurance product is your concern so in
that case you have to go for a realistic accessibility testing (manually as
my prior knowledge no automation tool provide you such a realistic result
)by real users. Which will provide you a realistic
challenges/issues/concerns of your product. Because I am sure the
accessibility challenges is higher in your domain as it is it*self a
complex domain.

And for reducing your budget you ca*n out*source
your Accessibility Testing Jobs!*

Elle,
Para-transit services are subsidized so that elderly / users with
disabilities can commute to work or for medical appointments.
Perhaps health insurance companies should bear some of the cost of
trips provided by paratransit services for to and fro medical
appointments covered by their plans / Medicare / Medicaid. This will
help to take the load off the paratransit services a bit. Or cover the
copay so that riders can use the service without a charge when they go
to and fro for med. appointments.
For starters (pilot project) consider covering only individuals who
have to go for dialysis every few days.
