Can someone please let me know how screenreader users handle background
music?
Am I missing something, or does this page not obliterate screenreader
output and make it difficult to navigate?

Hello,
It sure makes hearing the screen reader difficult. If the music was a
little fuller than a flute, then I would not be able to hear my screen
reader at all.
I really hate pages that start audio and don't have an obvious way of
pausing the audio at the start of the page.
Thanks,

But in general, if you can avoid having autoplaying audio/music in the
first place, that'd be best.

Well, that's what I thought.
This post came from a conversation where a screenreader user said that
if I as I was contacting this organisation anyway, could I mention
that their autoplay makes it difficult for screenreader users, as he
had tried to contact them and go no reply. So I tried it myself, found
the same, mentioned it as part of my email, and got pretty short
shrift in reply!
The person I was speaking to who brought this to my attention uses IE
and Jaws on Windows 7. There is a recording below I just made on my
own Windows 10 PC - the first 15 seconds is what I hear with
Chromevox, the remainder of the minute is with Firefox and NVDA.

The reason I posted here was in case me and screenreader user were
doing something wrong.
Looking at the page code, it looks like it is a microsoft embedded
plugin so it might be Mac users that don't get autoplay - all the
controls, visibility and so on are hidden, and the audio is set to
autoplay in the background on page load, so I cannot see any way that
a user could stop the playback.
Thanks.

You cannot take SR users in consideration only. What about if I am fully sighted in an office setting and I load that page. The music starts playing and it gets heard by my boss and teammates. In fact, it might be so loud on my end that it scares some folks. What did you achieve with background music at that point?
I will be so quick to close the page, because it is in the foreground. The same would apply to SR users. If it were me, I would alt + F4 out of it or CTRL + W to close the tab. I won't visit that site again even if it has something I want.
I just gave you my user experience because the guys on here spoke enough about WCAG. Always keep in mind your audience and how you might make their user experience on your site. If UX designers pay attention to that part, they would eliminate so many WCAG failures. That's what my years of experience taught me.

It's my understanding that Chrome has a hidden feature to mute tabs http://www.omgchrome.com/how-to-enable-tab-mute-chrome-feature/. There are also extensions that add a keyboard shortcut to enable this. I haven't tried this extension but this popped-up when I Googled muting tabs https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mute-tab-shortcuts/opcjanmpjbdbdpnjfjbboacibokblbhl?hl=en
