Hi all,
anyone else experience issues where you sometimes can and sometimes can't
navigate a page using the up and down arrows in NVDA and Firefox? I was
testing something today and the same page worked fine before, but now the
arrows make the page scroll. I also went to a WebAIM page and the same
thing happened. Is there a setting in NVDA that I need to adjust?
Thanks,
Mike

Due to a long-standing bug in Firefox, NVDA goes into focus mode upon launch if Firefox has the primary focus. This essentially means that you can only navigate by using tab and shift+tab keys. To prevent this, make sure that an application other than Firefox has focus when you start NVDA. Restarting Firefox when NVDA is running also resolves this issue.

Hello,
Exit out of edit mode with NVDA+space.
Otherwise press F6 twice and see if that helps. Sometimes Firefox stops
working right and you need to restart it.
Thanks,

Thanks, everyone. Restarting Firefox did the trick.
My next question is how to get the focus on a <button> element when
navigating with the up and down arrows. The button is not in a form. The
buttons in the forms get the focus a expected.
Thanks again,
Mike

Yeah I get this regularly and I just play around with focus/browse mode
back and forth until my keys work again.
I usually notice this by trying to get into the page's first heading and
instead hear "h". Toggling modes often fixes it.
cheers,

with NVDA, I seem to get browser focus on any focusable I run into as I
arrow.
I don't go into focus mode, I just see the outline dots and hitting
enter seems to work.
cheers,

If the screen reader is shifting into focus mode, toggling the mode (NVDA key+spacebar) should put you back into browse mode and your navigation should be restored.
