Good afternoon,

We are testing accessibility of pdf documents translated from English into Russian and Chinese. I cannot get nvda to properly read the documents. In Chinese it just states ‘Chinese letter letter letter' and in Russian it is speaking but not making any sense as our Russian translator cannot understand. Is there a critical step I am missing.
We have set the pdf document to the correct language, set the general and voice settings to the correct language in nvda. Any advice would be great.

Thanks,
Sara Willhite

Have you checked the PDFs with any other screen readers? I have seen plenty of PDFs where the glyphs that you see are different from the underlying characters that are exposed to screen readers. The easiest way to check this is to highlight some text in the PDF, copy it and paste it into another document such as Notepad or Word. You would hope that the text that appears in the new document is the same as what you see in the PDF, but sometimes it isn't.

I don't know why some PDF conversion applications do this, but if this is what's happening you will need to use a different conversion program.

Do you have synthesizers for the appropriate languages available to NVDA? Also, I am not sure if NVDA does automatic language switching when using PDF documents.

there is an active mailing list or NVDA on groups.io. You can search the archive.

Best wishes,

When NVDA speaks the Language name instead of the text, this is a hint
that you need to find a synthesiser which supports the language name
that was spoken.

check out the following page for more information.

Vocalizer or Acapela synthesizers may provide the language support you
need.
