Happy Friday!

Have you ever been in a situation when compliance and usability were in
conflict. How did you address the conflict?
Any thoughts?

Happy Friday!

I've been in situations where usability was not being considered when
working on accessibility but have never had them be in conflict.

Are you saying in order to make something conformant with WCAG, it caused
it to be unusable? If so, then that sounds like a poor implementation of
an accessibility issue.

In quite a few years of consulting or managing accessibility I've
pretty much never seen a conflict between compliance and usability.
It's more a case of, do we want to make something only technically
compliant, or do we want to make it truly a great AX (accessible
experience), sometimes you have to settle for compliant, at least in
phase one.

Hello,
I don't think accessibility and user experience can ever be in conflict. In
order to make a great user experience, it needs to be accessible. All
compliance is asking for is that the product be accessible to as many users
as possible.
This question may be stemming from the idea of making a great user
experience for a small subset of the population, and in that case, yes,
making the product more accessible may change that focused experience. But
digital products can be customized, and there can be preferences set by the
user to make the experience better for them specifically.
But mostly, the problem is that focused experience is very familiar and
liked by that small population, and they don't want to change it. This is
why we have compliance, so companies are required to think about more than
their narrow "target" customer.
Thanks,
