Good morning, folks -
I'm hoping for some insight on CommonLook Validator WCAG 2.0 AA failures I continue to get for links.
I've done some research on the failures but I was hoping for more explanation as to WHY this is a failure and HOW to remediate it and even IF it's something necessary to remediate or does it just become redundant to a screen reader user?

FAILURES REPORTED: CommonLook failure for WCAG Guideline 1.1: Provide text alternatives for all non-text content - "Parent tag of Link annotation doesn't define the Alt Attribute" and "Link Annotation doesn't define the Contents attribute."

Thank you,

CommonLook Validator and PAC 2024 often report issues as WCAG non-conformances when they are not. However, those issues are invariably PDF/UA non-conformances, so you may need to fix them anyway. I am not aware of any user experience issues arising from these two reported non-conformances, but it literally takes less than one minute to fix them.

"Link Annotation doesn't define the Contents attribute" is easy to deal with. In Acrobat, launch the Use Print Production > Preflight tool. Click the spanner button in the middle of the menu. Open the “Interactive elements and properties” section and click “Create Content entry for Link annotations”. Then click the Fix button. This fixes all the links in the document.

"Parent tag of Link annotation doesn't define the Alt Attribute" is controversial because it arises from a mistake in the drafting of the PDF/UA specification. The authors admit it should never have been made a requirement. There is no rationale for it, and it doesn’t benefit anyone. No one can even remember why it’s in there. As such, I advise clients not to worry about it unless the need to demonstrate full PDF/UA conformance for some reason. However, the fix for the previous issue also fixes this one.

Thank you, Steve!

This is great information and I went back into a working PDF that I have the mentioned CommonLook errors, but I do not have "Create Content entry for Link annotations" listed under the “Interactive elements and properties” section.
I have: Discard all JavaScripts; Flatten all annotations into page contents; Flatten all form field into page contents; Move annotations out of page area, remove TrapNet, PrinterMark, Custom, and all multimedia annotations.

Have you got Acrobat Professional? If you've got another version, you might not have all the options – there are a lot more than you listed. This is what I see.

That screenshot was extremely helpful because I didn't have the correct option selected from the top center dropdown menu - I had to update that option to "Acrobat Pro DC 2015 Profiles."
Once I made that update I was able to see the required option from the “Interactive elements and properties” section.

Thank you, again, so much!
