Hello WEBAIM,
I recently received a document in PDF that is said to be 207 pages long.
The PDF when accessed only shows page thumbnails as I scroll through it.
Downloading the document doesn't seem to work or show up in File Explorer
Downloads.
I will eventually want to save this document as MS Word either docx or RTF.
A post at the NVDA group (2017) recommends installing and using PDF Acrobat
Reader DC. Is this a freebie, and where can it best be obtained?
Thanks for your assistance!

David,
Acrobat Reader is free and available at adobe.com. They change their website all the time over the years so you'd have to go to their site and look around. Watch when doing the install as they sometimes bundle in some trial version of an antivirus program that you likely don't want to suddenly have running on your machine.
As for the view your seeing in the long document, there is the ability when a creator of a PDF is saving it to pick what the initial view will be upon opening the document. I see that as an option after looking at the properties for a file within Acrobat Pro but do not see that same tab in the properties for Acrobat Reader.
My experience has been that Acrobat's export to Word or text file can create a mangled mess so don't assume that you messed up if the exported file is a mess. Others on this list may have better guidance on this point.

Hello Doug,
Thanks for your observations concerning Acrobat Adobe Reader.
The party in question has agreed to offer me an MS Word version instead,
next week.
I will google mean time to see the difference between Adobe Acrobat DC,
Pro, and the Reader that came on my computer for PDF, but have a hunch that
may be bundled in MS Word 2019.
Thanks again.
truly appreciated,
David Russell

Firefox doesn't strip the tags from PDFs either.

I’ll save you some googling. Acrobat DC (Document Cloud) is the updated Acrobat Reader and it only reads the document. Acrobat Pro is needed for editing and extracting content from the PDF. Office has updated as of Fall 2024 to improve PDF exporting without plugins.
The PDF may open in a browser, which is a default setting. All browsers strip tags from the PDF and display text only, except for Brave browser. They seem to be able to maintain PDF tagging. You may need to edit how PDF’s are opened to state Acrobat software instead of the browser.
