I am accustomed to using JAWS to test web pages for lang="es" and other languages.
I realized that some JAWS voices provide multiple language support and some do not.

However, now, for my work, I am doing the same type of testing on a Mac.
The OS is Catalina.
I have installed multiple voices.
I can hear Spanish being read when I choose it for a Spanish website or document.
What I cannot do is get Voiceover to switch from 1 language to another in the middle of a page.

On another forum I was told to Go to Settings/Accessibility/VoiceOver/Speech/Detect Languages/ and choose Toggle On.
But there is not Toggle On for me on that screen.

I would appreciate any guidance you can give.
Thanks,
Leslie

I just tried this on my Mac, Catalina 10.15.3

I didn't have any languages installed prior to trying this. I went to the
"VoiceOver Utility" dialog and then the Speech settings. All that was
displayed was English so I added two new languages, Spanish and French, and
kept the default voices for those languages.

I then tried a simple test with

<button>english</button>
<button>hola</button>
<button>merci</button>
<button lang="es">hola</button>
<button lang="fr">merci>/button>

The first three buttons were announced in English.
The fourth button automatically switched to Spanish.
The fifth button automatically switched to French.

I didn't do anything special. It didn't matter if I tabbed to the buttons
or swiped left/right or used the left/right arrow keys. The language
switched automatically.

Hello,
VoiceOver support is still not as good on the Mac for this as on IOS. First make sure you have voices added for the languages you are working with. Then These are found in the speech area of VoiceOver utility. Then use the keystroke vo-command-shift left until you hear voice and use vo-command-shift-up until you hear automatically with based on language.
I can't be sure this works, because I usually only see English in my systems.
I have talked to a Greek person who claims that the Mac will just say greek letter X greek letter y when reading greek.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn
