Hello all,

Does anyone of you know why VoiceOver on my MAC keeps announcing
"Ignoring next keypress" when I tap Tab key, it does not move my focus
to the next interactive element nor does it announce anything else
other than the one I mentioned in quotes. Is this a VoiceOver
behavior?

Thanks in advance

Regards,
Allyssa.

I know you can tell VoiceOver to send a keypress to the application instead
of having VoiceOver interpret the key but you have to press Control plus
Option plus Tab and then the next keypress goes to the app.

It sounds like your VO shortcut key (Control plus Option) is stuck? Or
maybe you use the CapsLock key for your VO shortcut.

Thanks Glen for the link.
I remember some time ago on the list someone mentioned having difficulty with navigation on the web with Voiceover.
Anyway using the link you provided I also found the following that might explain this issue.
*article begin *
Use VoiceOver and the Tab key to navigate on Mac
In Keyboard System Settings, you can set an option to use keyboard navigation to move the keyboard focus between controls such as text boxes, lists, radio buttons or tickboxes. When you turn on the option, you can press the Tab key to move the keyboard focus forwards, or press the Shift and Tab keys at the same time to move the keyboard focus backwards.

See Use your keyboard like a mouse.

When you turn VoiceOver on, the keyboard navigation option is automatically selected (if not already on). When you turn VoiceOver off, it's deselected (if it hadn't already been on). To turn the option on or off at any time, press Control-F7.

When you use the Tab key to navigate while VoiceOver is on, keep these points in mind:

To navigate in reverse, press Shift-Tab.

When the VoiceOver cursor lands on an item, you immediately interact with the item (you don't need to enter a command). To turn off this automatic interaction of the Tab key, open VoiceOver Utility (press VO-F8 when VoiceOver is on), navigate to the Navigation category, then deselect “Automatically interact when using tab key”.

Note: VO represents the VoiceOver modifier. See Use the VoiceOver modifier.

Hello, allyssa!

Most likely, the VO keys were blocked. Press VO+; to fix the problem.

I forgot about locking the VO modifier key. Nice, Alexander. I don't use
that key very often. Usually you have to press Control plus Option (or
CapsLock) plus the key to perform an action such as VO plus Command plus H
to navigate to the next heading. But if you're going to navigate
frequently, you might want to lock the VO key on so that you only have to
press Command plus H. You do that with VO plus semicolon. That locks or
unlocks the VO modifier.

If the VO key is locked on, then a simple Tab key becomes VO plus Tab,
which is the shortcut for sending the next key sequence to the app instead
of to VoiceOver and thus you'd hear "ignoring next keypress" when you
simply pressed Tab. You might have accidentally hit Control plus Option
plus semicolon (or CapsLock plus semicolon) and locked the VO modifier
key. Pressing Control plus Option plus semicolon should unlock the VO
modifier and Tab should be Tab again.
