Hi friends,

I am looking for advice about tools and methods for how to evaluate ePub
files (typically from Publishers) for accessibility.

- Is there a tool that can check ePubs?
- Can I export to another format like MS Word and test there? I could
use Calibre to do that, but I am not sure how accurate a test that would
be.

What are the rest of you doing?

Thanks,

Brian

I believe daisy.org <http://daisy.org/>; has some resources. Also, pub is essentially a zip file containing HTML and other resources.

There is a lot to know about EPUBs, a lot of checking has to be done
manually. However, there are two programs. ACE by Daisy and then check the
EPUB code with Pagina. Calibre doesn't produce great stuff a lot of the
time, use the Daisy tool and it comes out way better. With EPUBs its a
website, but it then you have the EPUB code.

Cheers

Oh and it depends if you are Mac or PC for many of the tools. ACE goes on
both, Pagina I used on PC.

Hello Brian,

> how to evaluate ePub files

In my experience, epubs are zip files. So you can simply change the file extension and then unzip it and check the HTML files it contains.

The problem is usually not the ePub, but the viewer, which hasN't an accessible interface.

Thanks for all the responses.
Daisy does have ACE accessibility checker. Its Doc to ePub tool also does
the reverse. This is helpful for making sure it was a good OCR that was
edited afterward. The spell checker quickly helps me check that.
