Hi,
I need some accessible way to indicate what step in a process someone is at on a web page. For example:
Visually, down the left side of the page is a list of steps for making a peanut butter sandwich. Down the right side is a detailed description of the process.
What are the different possibilities for indicating what step the person is on? Do you have any examples?
Thanks!

Tim,

Its important to keep in mind that screen reader software does not make a distinction between the left and right side of the screen. An accessible page could work as follows.

A list of the steps, with each step being a link to the corresponding process. Hence, the user will see step # ..., link. Then when they click on the link the process is read with a link to the next step.

Another alternative is to have the step as a heading:
...
then have the process immediately following below in paragraphs.

I don't know if this is what you mean, but we have a section on our site where people do "lessons" and we try to keep people cued by how table of contents is marked on the right side. The page/step they are currently using is bolded and not linked to show that's where they are. Plus, when a screen reader runs across it, it will know which isn't linked and person can select the next linked step. We also include a "next page" link at the bottom of each step.

Would the "bread crumb" technique work here?

For example, along the top have Home > Step 1 > Step 2.... Just a thought. Paul at WebAIM can probably explain this better than I can.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Glenda
