I have learned that the latest update of iTunes (version 7.1) is now
accessible with Apple's Voice Over screenreader for Mac OS X. This is big
news for users of the iTunes application who are blind or visually impaired,
as it is the first and only instance of the iTunes program that is
accessible via screen reading technology.

Unfortunately, the Windows-based iTunes is still not accessible for users of
screen reading applications like JAWS, Supernova or Window Eyes.

You can get the latest update for iTunes at:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Now to add a self-voicing capability to the iPod interface as well and
you're laughing...heck, even as a sighted user, I'd take advantage of it
to skip between tracks without having to take the thing out of my pocket.

There certainly a lot of excited chatter on the Mac Visionary list -
however I have to say (I am indeed compelled) - that this is one instant
where even though it now far more accessible than it was, it still would
not entice me to pay 99 cents per track.

emusic anyone?

Josh

It's funny you should say that:
http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/apple_files_patent_for_an_
audio_interface_for_the_ipod/

It might not be too far off, although the method seems to be different
from having a screen reader. It seems more like iTunes creates the menus
(with desktop processing power), and your iPod simply reading them.

Kind regards,

Bring it on :)

While we are going all blue sky - I would like to be able to talk to
mine and tell it to skip this track etc especially when I have it in
shuffle mode, which is a lot of the time, so I could say 'Catpod' (as
thats its name), and it would recognise this as a command to wake up -
and perform the next command 'Skip this track', 'Go to playlist' etc.

Apple already do something similar with Mac OS X speech. You press a
listen key, give a keyword, then speak your commands.
