I've become interested in ensuring that certain spellings are accessible to
screen reader users, so far I have changed a few conventions and wondered
what others thought and possibly suggestions of other words that I might
not yet have thought of (I expect there could be a few, given that I am only
suggesting two here).
"Sitemap" in favour for "Site map"
"Email" in favour for "E-mail"
And in any such cases, if search engine queries were in favour of the least
favoured spelling, how would that affect keywords (being that they're
sensitive).
Regards,
Steven

"Sitemap" in favour for "Site map"
Sitemap is different from Site map.
Sitemap protocol - http://www.sitemaps.org/ which the major search engines
and Yahoo! use to help index the site.
So that might mess up your keywords.

As a screen reader user I think that this is a nonissue. AS in many cases
when it comes to conducting a search the accuracy of a search relies on the
user and not the screen reader. Just as any computer user learns how to
enter search terms it should be no different for screen reader users.

Interesting, Emerson.
I had always thought that an XML sitemap was in fact an XML version of a
html site map ... that said, I have always approached them a little
differently (the html version being more concise and user-friendly).

Just had a conversation last week with my friend Steve who is a screen
reader user and this topic came up. He indicated he didn't care about the
spelling or how the screen reader pronounced, or mispronounced word, just as
long as it did so consistently.
Interesting point, I thought.

I second consistency as first priority, John. In the case of brail users
though, I do wonder how such issues affect them.

As a screen reader user, e-mail is perfectly fine. There's hardly any
difference unless one listens closely or have the punctuation setting
cranked up to hear all punctuations. Even still the convention has been to
use e-mail. Sitemap/site map, I entirely agree. I think it should be two
words to begin with.

Hmmm. I knew about xml sitemaps and html site maps but I didn't
realize they were spelled differently or the real differences in them.
Here is a wiki about xml sitemaps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitemaps
