Hi all,
I've tagged some headers on a calendar page as <abbr title="Sunday"> Sun
</abbr> etc., but when I have Jaws read it, it ignores the abbr tag. Can
anyone help me understand why?
Thanks,
Liz

As far as I know, Jaws does not support the ABBR tag. It only supports the
ACRONYM tag. You may want to use the acronym instead, even if the item is
technically not an acronym. Some people will look down on this approach,
because "Sun" is not an acronym, but at least Jaws will read the expanded
version of the text correctly. This is a judgment call that you will have to
make (whether to have technically correct markup or to have a tag that works
for Jaws).

Thanks very much. Is there a resource that tells us which tags work with
which programs?
TIA,
Liz

Hi,
The <abbr> tag is defined by W3C but not browser supported yet.

I have to admit that I don't know of a resource quite like that, although it
would be nice to put one together. I've made a note of the idea, and will
see if I can either find an existing resource or create one myself (probably
not right away, however).

Well, besides plowing thru' Goodman's "Dynamic HTML", the quickest reference
I found was VisiBone's HTML Card which lists elements & attributes, CSS
properties & special characters on a 4-sided laminated card or wall chart.

A similar and helpful URI
<http://www.webreview.com/style/css1/charts/mastergrid.shtml>;, but
still not what was mentioned.
Knowing what Screen Reader software packages (ie JAWS, OutSpoken,
Lynxs, and versions) supports what tags, styles, etc. would be useful.
I am not aware of such a data collection.
