Hello,

I am looking for information on the input usage preference of visually
impaired for iPad - do they use screen touch as input or they prefer
keyboard with voiceover? The reason why I ask this is: when I use touch
as input I can read all the content under my finger irrespective if it's
accessible or not but the same behavior doesn't exist when I use
voiceover with a keyboard. Thus wanted to know mostly what is preferred
by visually impaired users: touch or keyboard as input device?

Hi there,

I use an iPhone and I can't say if I prefer a keyboard because I have no desire to even try a keyboard. The gestures are just too handy and fast with Voiceover and I can do it one handed. I haven't seen the point in cluttering things up with a keyboard.

Not sure if that helps since it's not a comparison.

Hi Pooja,

for a DeafBlind person who has no vision and cannot hear speech, these
options would not work at all. For these people they would need both
keyboard and a braille display device to access the information. For those
same people who cannot read braille, then they are out of luck as far as
assistive technology is concern.

With Warm Regards,
Randy Pope

I've been an iPad 2 VoiceOver accessibility user since March/April. I
absolutely enjoy it, think it's a great device, great spatial
exploration/concepts, equal access, and so much untapped potential.

For navigation, reading, and interacting with iPad, VoiceOver, apps,
sites, content, etc. I prefer and use the touch screen. it's very
efficient, effective, and a great user experience.

Thanks Kevin! My query was based on evaluating mobile web/app for WCAG
2.0 - keyboard accessible guidelines.

Another basic question - which date format, is user friendly for screen
reader users, considering its Mobile web - iphone:

a. 12/07/11

b. December 7, 2011

c. Dec 7, 2011

d. 7-Dec-11

I think out of the all 12/07/11 isn't user friendly but it really
depends on the user!

Hi Pooja,

I think that WCAG 2.0 will need to be updated to address touch screen
access )e.g. iOS devices with VoiceOver)

b-d are for the most part read the same: VoiceOver will read it as
December 7, 2011 or December 7th 2011. It will depend on
region/language setting.

I think that December 7, 2011 is the best as date format. NVDA,
Voiceover and other screen readers will all read it the same and it
will not try to do any fancy guessing, converting, etc.
