Quick question.
Does Adobe DA play unprotected EPUB2 books as well?
I've been asked to test EPUB2 books that are unprotected, but not sure
what software to even try, besides EasyReader and ReadHere.
What about iBooks?
What about Android book reader?
Thanks

From what I understand the only applications that will read iBooks documents
(.ibook) is the iOS iBook app and iBooks Author on Mac OSX Lion.

Adobe DA will read EPUB books on Mac OSX, but I have not been able to get
VoiceOver to work with DA.

I tested DA yesterday with Jaws and NVDA (preview 3 ov version 1.8)
and read an unprotected epub2 book with no problems (braille and voice
support), though sometimes it appears the space between a full stop
and the first letter of the following sentence sometimes disappears,
not sure if it is the book or the software though.
Good experience so far, though I have yet to play with other formats.
Are there any discussion lists on accessible eBooks in particular.
I realize this is a very borderline topic for this list, but have
quite a few questions on the subject.

Small point of order:

We should be calling it "D E". Editions, not Additions; so DE not DA.
Or ADEP, for "Adobe Digital Editions Preview".

Oops. DE DA DE DA DO.

Birkir - If you find a group on accessible e-books, let me know. I am
involved with the team in Maine working on Accessible Instructional
Materials (www.maine-aim.org ) and we are very interested in the topic. I
took a training program last week with folks from Apple on iBooks and iBooks
Author - which does work with VoiceOver.

I just discovered Adobe came out with a preview edition of Digital Editions
(ver 1.8) the will work with VoiceOver on the Mac (Yipee!). Directions for
downloading and installing are here:
http://blogs.adobe.com/accessibility/2011/11/digital-editions-1-8-1-availabl

Adobe has also announced some new support for Open Source AT - specifically
support for NVDA's ability to interact with PDF documents, AIR applications,
and ebooks read in Adobe Digital Editions, and for general HTML and ARIA
improvements.

Read all about it:

>> From the FAQ at http://www.ereadable.com/info/FAQ.asp
>> Why do I get a file with the extension .acsm when I download an Adobe
>> PDF or ePub eBook?
>> When you start to download an Adobe PDF a small file with the
>> extension .acsm is first downloaded. This is used by Adobe Digital
>> Editions to send the activation ID to the delivery server which will
>> use that ID to generate an encrypted PDF/ePub eBook, which is then
>> downloaded to your PC. If your computer is asking you where to save
>> the .acsm file then your Adobe Digital Editions may not be installed
>> correctly or not yet authorized. Often you can solve this issue by
>> simply setting your computer to always use Adobe Digital Editions to
>> open this type of file (in Windows XP, for instance, right click on
>> the file and choose Open With, select Adobe Digital Editions and tick
>> the box to tell Windows to remember the setting; for other operating
>> systems please read your documentation).
>>
>> Hope this helps.
