Hey Guys
Before I venture into this, has anyone created Survey Monkey surveys
as a blind/screen reader user, and has that worked well?
Also all my text and labels will have to be in a foreign language, is
there any reason why that would possibly be a barrier to doing this?
Cheers

Yes, Survey Monkey is JAWS accessible. I did manage to create my
survey in the past. I am not quite sure about if you want to create in
a different language though. I would think that you shouldn't have any
problems with it.

We also found surveys produced by surveymonkey accessible in JAWs [with IE or firefox, JAWs does not mix well with chrome - for anything, but if using chrome would recommend chromevox, unlike JAWs its free]
We also found surveygizmo and questionpro produced surveys accesssible
But, how accessible are these survey tools for generating surveys?
Has anyone generated a survey using surveymonkey or other commercial software?
If so please relate experiences.
I am sighted and use bold, italic and colours for emphasis, but concerned that screen readers do not pick up this form of emphasis
Any suggestions?
Best

As I recently posted to this list, on August 14:
This topic of survey tools has been discussed many times on the
WebAIM list. Here's a link to an extended thread from July of 2011:
This thread discusses the output from tools.
The topic of "preferred survey platform" was also opened in the last
couple of weeks. This discussion began on August 13. Here's a link
to that thread:
http://webaim.org/discussion/mail_thread?threadT45
Not that we're voting, but if I were, I'd vote that this question of
accessible survey tools gets asked most often on this list.
It never ceases to impress me how easy the WebAIM archives are to
search and read. Thanks for that, Jared, and any other responsible
members of the WebAIM team.

Hey
Thanks Jenifer. My concern has more to do with how easy it is for a
screen reader user to use these tools.
After my initial tries yesterday (only about 45 minutes), producing
the answer choices was no problem, but the question text that I enter
into the edit box, does not appear in the survey preview at least,
only "q1", no text at all.
Also once you start moving around inside the list of question types
you are automatically put into the edit firled for the answers, unless
you use the virtual buffer to select the type of question from the
screen reader buffer (alt arrow down in Jaws).
So, slightly disappointed with my first 45 minutes of Survey Monkey,
not that I have given up, and I'd happily find out I did something
wrong, rather than there are major issues with the survey creation
tools.

Very useful, BUT

I do have access to above, what to do?

Excellent thread
http://go.osu.edu/survey-accessibility-osaac2012 by ken petri is excellent
Not that we're voting, but if I were, I'd vote that this question of accessible survey tools gets asked most often on this list.
Agree how can advice like petri's assessment be made more salient on the excellent WebAIM site?
Its my impression that there is an awful lot of re-inventing of the wheel
Still looking for answeres to following questions
1. How best to emphasise text in screen reader accessible ways?
2. What is best survey software if screen reader user has to CREATE a survey?
NB its difficult to be fair to all survey generators since they have many themes
We found surveygizmo did relocate user to question with error, ot just the page
ADVICE to survey tool makers, for each theme specify if it is htm5 ancd css3 compliant and whether it recognized devices and adjusts to phone, tablet, and computer screen resolution.

Diana and all:
I don't have answers to all of your questions, though I would say
that I don't necessarily think it's WebAIm's responsibility to use
its resources to publicize other people's work, though of course,
that's their call. I think their list archives, as I said, tend to
be an excellent starting point for most inquiries.
A brief answer to one of your questions, below.

JS: I assume you mean you do *NOT* have access to that thread. I'm
not sure why it didn't work, but what *I* did to correct it is to
search the archives for
"Accessible survey tools"
Try this thread from July of 2011:
http://webaim.org/discussion/mail_thread?threadG80
Good luck to all. Birkir, I know what you're after, but it looks like
this thread is evolving.
One of the reasons that the WebAIM archives work well is that people
on this list do a pretty decent job of "minding" subject lines.
Good luck to all,
Jennifer

Hey all.
Yes Jenifer, I agree. I know we have a lot of "which is the best
survey platform" type discussions, and I did not mean this to turn
into another one.
MOre specifically, my problem, after trying for a bit, is this. When I
enter questions in the question field, they do not show up in the
preview survey (nor the finalized link). The answers show up (I choose
radiobutton tyupe answers and type in the answer choices, those show
up without a hitch).
The question text does not even show up if I choose "edit question"
after the fact, and add it back in. I am a bit stumped, and I will
read manuals, contact customer support, and try to figure this out,
that is unless some of you already know the answer to this, feel free
to email me off-list if you think this inappropriate (though I think
more people might benefit from a how-to on this).
Cheers

And of course technology and accessibility of the products could not have changed at all in the intervening year since that thread. I often base my purchasing decisions on information that is a year out of date.
I've been getting the distinct impression lately that the WebAIM Discussion List should just be rebranded as the WebARIA Discussion List. That seems to be the only topic that is tolerated ad infinitum. Other topics get shot down or ridiculed. ("What idiot still uses PDFs!?! All the cool kids use HTML5 and ARIA!")
When I joined, it was with the impression that this was a general electronic accessibility list. And it so obviously isn't. I think it's time for me to admit I've accidentally joined the wrong club, clean out my locker, and go.

Donna and all:
A response, below, with apologies that the discussion seems to be
moving away from survey tools . . .

JS: I would think (maybe I made the mistake of assuming) it's quite
obvious that we all know this. I'm sorry you chose what I honestly
tried to make a very helpful post to vent your frustration. What I
would say is that I happened to have time to try to help, in hopes of
speeding up the discussion so we wouldn't have to rehash the same
points and could *start*, rather than end, at where we left off in 2011.
I also was trying to highlight the value of this list's archives and
how to use them when they actually *can* be helpful and save a lot of time.
I sure am sorry to see that you've become so frustrated with the
list. I regret my efforts to try to help the community gain even more
value from the list seem to have been taken very much otherwise than
I intended.
Wishing everyone a good day.
Jennifer
