The exam window is open to take the IAAP (International Association of Web
Accessibility Professionals) certification exams:
- Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC), and
- Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS)
You can take either exam on its own, or both. If you pass both exams, you
receive a combined credential of Certified Professional in Web
Accessibility (CPWA).
The exam window is September 11 - October 31, 2017. You must register a
minimum of 5 days in advance, so plan accordingly.
Register to take the exam(s) at
http://www.accessibilityassociation.org/certificationapplication
- CPACC info: http://www.accessibilityassociation.org/cpacccertification
- WAS info: http://www.accessibilityassociation.org/wascertification
Why certify?
- Some employers are already listing IAAP certification as a desired
qualification for accessibility-related jobs
- Certification allows you to stand apart from other people who may not
be as qualified.
- The act of studying for certification gives you an opportunity to
sharpen your own knowledge and skills
- Having a critical mass of certified professionals raises the profile
of the whole profession, giving it added legitimacy in the eyes of some
employers who may not be as tuned in to accessibility as we would want them
to be.
There are exam preparation courses available through several venders,
including IAAP-approved content providers:

Thank you for sending this information out. How long has IAAP been around?

The IAAP officially launched March 2014, but it had been in the works many
years before that. There are a lot of steps that go into launching a
professional organization, so it takes time to do it right. Certification
through IAAP has been available since March of 2016, so that's relatively
new (certification is another thing that takes time to do right), but it is
gaining traction, and becoming an important part of the accessibility
profession.
As for my own role in all of this, I've been the Chair of the Certification
Committee since even before the IAAP officially launched. We are in the
process of transitioning to a slightly different Certification Committee
model, so my role will evolve there, but I'm still very much involved.
