Yeah, I have no idea whether or not this will work either. I'm trying to
avoid hauling around more devices than necessary when traveling, trying to
get more experience with NVDA. I'm a Mac guy, but do some technical work in
Parallels on occasion to avoid firing up my PC.

I'm trying to figure out how to get screen reader support enabled within
Google Docs, but the hot key combination doesn't seem to work. I'm getting
the usual audible feedback from NVDA when navigating through a doc via
directional keys.

I'm guessing it's because I'm trying to do this within Parallels on a Mac,
but I'm hoping that someone else has run into a similar issue and has
sorted it out.

cheers,
Levon

hi i have done this and i would say your best bet is to use vmwair or
vertual box. the UI is kinda bad in vb so if your blind vmwair is the
better choice i tryed pairalellsfew years ago and it was not good at
managing the sound so that the speachj did not come out rite at all

I would second this. As a blind tester, I use VMWare daily. The accessibility of VMWare is quite good. Windows10 is well behaved, in fact, it is rare I start my Windows computer these days in preference for the Mac.

Thanks to you both for the feedback. I finally gave up and enabled it from
the Google Docs menu. I'm doing testing work, so it's the hot key issue
doesn't affect me directly, but hopefully someone with Parallels will be
able to address it in their product eventually. I'm thrilled to jot have to
fire up a Windows box now, especially when on the road.

Cheers,
Levon

Don't forget that Hyper-V is accessible as well and already built into Windows 10.

I know you are a Mac guy, but Parallel is not accessible with Voiceover. I tested it for months at BestBuy headquarters and some parts of it required the use of a sighted help, which is not my first choice.

Maybe you want to put OS10 in a VM and carry your PC around. I would suggest that over carrying your Mac with Parallel. Don't waste your time on it.

Of course, you know you can install Windows on a Mac machine. So if the hardware is your concern, you can take advantage of that and still have your Mac with you.

Hello,

Correct me if I'm wrong. It was my understanding that Hyper-v did not provide access to sound in a VM.

Hi Levon,

While it is a long time since I used a VM on my Mac IIRC there can be
issues getting
reliable screen reader output depending on whether the VM enables native
booting.

I think I ended up abandoning parallels (and Fusion) and using Bootcamp
as I was getting
odd/inconsistent screen reader output in my tests.

IIRC also Jared (of this parish) has written about this somewhere..

I have not used it in a long time, but if you use the Hyper-V connect screen, you may not get sound. Typically, I use Remote Desktop Session to connect to even my VMware machines. That way JAWS gets authorized using my Remote Access License.

I tend to rely on RDP heavily as I can obtain more control over my VM with it. I know it requires some firewall tweaking and understanding how to setup the network adapter, but I have plenty of knowledge to setup an array of VMs on one machine using NAT.

If interested, I can discuss that in more details with you off the list.
