I like to alternate between my two most recently used tabs in firefox by
using ctrl+tab. Similar to how I can alternate between my two most
recently used apps by using alt+tab (on a pc). But I can't get this
feature to work in firefox and it's frustrating from a keyboard user
perspective.

I used to use firefox 56 and ESR since the quantum version didn't work well
with jaws. With those versions of firefox, I could use an addon called
tabmixplus that enabled the ctrl+tab to work. It was great. I'm using
firefox 61 now (the latest non-beta update) and with firefox quantum, the
tabmixplus addon no longer works and firefox disables it as a "legacy"
addon.

However, there's an option in about:preferences (or tools > options) called
"Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order". It basically just
changes the "browser.ctrlTab.previews" config option from false to true.
If I have both the preferences and config options open, I can see changing
the value in one updates the other and vice versa.

But the option doesn't work for me. Ctrl+tab still just sequentially goes
through the tabs. I've tried running with all addons disabled, I've
restarted firefox, and I've rebooted. Nothing can get it to work. I was
curious if anyone uses that option.

I realize this isn't the answer that you are looking for, but I will often use ctrl+tab and ctrl+shift+tab to go back and forth between two tabs in Firefox.

Hope that helps at least a little!

I also use control+tab frequently. However, I tend to make the assumption that control+tab takes me to the next tab in the order of tabs and not to the most recently used tab. I don't think I have had problems with this in Firefox with the v60 and v61 updates.

I am also a strong keyboard shortcut user. I have used Control+Tab (or
Control+Shift+Tab) extensively in Firefox for the last 6 years to move from
tab to tab. I am not familiar with the shortcut to reach the most recent
tabs.

Thanks, Dan. Yes, I'm aware of ctrl+tab and shift+ctrl+tab. That works
for tabs that are adjacent to each other but I often have dozens of tabs
open. If I want to switch back and forth between tabs 3 and 9, for
example, I have to press ctrl+tab six times each way, which isn't
pleasant. And before someone mentions ctrl+<number>, yes I'm aware of that
too. I can use ctrl+1 through ctrl+8 to go directly to tabs 1 through 8.
ctrl+9 is a special key that goes to the last tab, so if I had 20 tabs
open, I can go directly to the first 8 tabs and the 20th tab (with
ctrl+9). But having to remember which number is the tab I want is a
cognitive load, and only works for the first eight tabs. I'm out of luck
if I want to switch between tabs 11 and 18 (out of 20 tabs).

And in case anyone is thinking, "Why are so many tabs open?", I'm a busy
guy :-) I have various tabs open on apps that I'm auditing, various wcag
requirements, authoring practice design patterns, a11y blogs that i'm
currently reading. The tabs are kind of my "to do" list. If there's
something I want to read, I'll leave the tab there until I get to it.

Good points -- I actually end up dragging one of the tabs so that the two that I need to go between are right next to each other and then I ctrl+(shift)+tab between them. I actually didn't know about ctrl+# -- that's good to know!

Quick note, in Firefox you can CTRL+PGUP / CTRL+PGDN to stick to keyboard while moving tabs around. I do that all the time, as I have my OS grabbing the CTRL+Tab key to switch desktops.

The default behavior of using ctrl+tab to go sequentially through all the
tabs is not broken. I'm talking about going into options and checking the
"Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order" option. That
doesn't work for me.

Glenn,

If I am understanding you correctly. You have currently two pages open.

Page 1
Page 2

If the tab for page 1 is open and you open another page. Page 3. The feature
you are talking back should switch from page one to page three? Is this
correct?

Yes, Sean, that's essentially what I'm talking about, although on a larger
scale. If 20 tabs are open and I'm reading tab 10 and select a link from
tab 10 that opens another tab, if the new tab was added to the end of the
list of open tabs (so it's tab 21), I want to use ctrl+tab to switch
between tab 10 and tab 21. I want to toggle back and forth quickly.
