I could return from a PDF to the previous HTML5 page using Alt+left cursor key.
Two weeks ago, this NVDA keystroke stopped working.

Is there a way this can be resolved?

Best wishes

I use alt+leftarrow as the browser back button all the time, but
occasionally it doesn't work. In your situation, I presume you are viewing
the PDF in the browser itself?

The shortcut key should be a browser key, not an NVDA key.

I find it an easy shortcut because it's easy for my hands to hit those two
keys. Left thumb on the left alt and right thumb on the left arrow, hands
split.

If the PDF opens in a new tab or window it wouldn't work.
Also, which browser are you using? There was a recent update to
Chrome, though I did not notice this problem with it, granted I have
not tested for it specifically, I always open my PDF files in a new
tab.
