Hello everyone!
Let me introduce myself first.
My name is Vsevolod, I am from Russia.
I am a student of the university, I am finishing the first course and studying at the IT faculty.
I am interested in a web-development and learning django now.
But i am also interested in web-accessibility.
I don't know practically anything about it except of WCAG existence.
I have a question.
I would like to dive into web-accessibility, but i am not sure what to start with.
Could you please recommend me any materials to learn as a beginner?
Or is it better to start diving into reading WCAG right from the start and trying to read it's documentation?
Thank you in advance!

Hi Vsevolod

It's disappointing to find that, like most colleges and universities, your university doesn't have a whole module on the subject.

I would say that it's better to look into the background of accessibility before tackling WCAG. You've probably already figured it out or else you wouldn't even have the interest, but learning why it is necessary is a good start. Find out how assistive technology (AT) - such as screen readers, magnifiers and switch controls - work with apps and websites. Youtube have plenty of examples but it is also good to try them out if you can. Apple, Android and Microsoft devises come with AT built in, but I would also recommend NVDA as a screen reader to try. There are plenty of websites that explain how to use AT to test a11y.

Once you've got a background of what and why, you will hopefully find the WCAG less daunting. The 'Understanding WCAG' sites are more detailed than just the straight-forward WCAG pages, but they don't always have the most up-to-date info.

The BBC and Apple also have some good guidelines for a11y that you might like to take a look at. Again, Google will find them for you.

Cheers

Barry

Hello Barry,
Thank you for your answer!
I am a completely blind user myself but it is still really useful to know about the accessibility background. I am using nvda, VoiceOver on MacOS and iOS. Thank you and I will surely ask questions when I have more information.

Look up the blind Accessibility Test (BATS) test web page. This is a good group to join. Join the blind- programming_l mailing list for the programming side of things.

Check out the following sites as a starter:
* Smashing magazine, there is some books here you will find of use.
* The major accessibility USA and European accessibility organisations vendors. They have many blogs.
* IBM, Microsoft, Apple, Android all have good design system and design documentation to review.
* MMarco Ze has a good blog on Firefox development tools.
* read the W3C documentation.

The NVDA add-on, Developer toolkit 20.04 has been released. You can read about and download it below.

Hi Vsevolod

You've already got a good idea of why a11y is needed. I'm a blind pc and iPhone user myself, but I had to find out how to use the Mac and Android to properly test a11y. Boy, that was a steep and frustrating learning curve, but worthwhile.

Hello Vsevolod,

It's great that you are interested in accessibility! My suggestions for getting started:

* A free online course "Introduction to Web Accessibility" (available through September) is introduced here:
https://www.w3.org/blog/2019/12/free-online-course-introduction-to-web-accessibility/

* W3C WAI website resources, starting with "Introduction to Web Accessibility" page, and following the links on that page to:
Essential Components of Web Accessibility
How People with Disabilities Use the Web
Accessibility Principles
... and more
https://www.w3.org/WAI/fundamentals/accessibility-intro/

After you understand the basics from the course &/or those pages, then WCAG will make more sense. :-) And note the starting place for WCAG is the Overview page at: https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/

Best regards,
~Shawn

Hi Vsevolod,

For elementary level of knowing accessibility, You can start with
webaim.org/articles in with you can go with Introduction to web
accessibility, Types of disabilities, Design consideration, HTML
accessibility, CSS Accessibility, and so on.

They are very short articles with easy language for non native English people.

I have read some articles such as accessibility principals, about WCAG documentation structure and the links that are followed there.

Now i have these questions.

Did I understand correctly that aria recommendations are used when there are more complicated situations when wcag cannot be used and aria suggests attouching roles to items that are inaccessible? Or how does it work?

As far as I understood after reading the mailing list, it is necessary to know html5 and /javascript.

Did i understand it correctly?

Are the mozilla web developer (mdn) courses for frontend developers good start to the topic for html5 and js?

I have started reading html5 course in mdn, however, i already have some knowledge of html, these courses are really useful to me because i learned about atributes.

So, did I understand it correctly that I need to learn html5 and javascript before diving into wcag and aria? In which cases aria is used? Thank you in advance!

Correction: when HTML cannot be used. When there are
widgets/constructs/controls that you simply can't do just in HTML (like
tab panels, accordions, modal dialogs) but you need to still convey what
they are to screen readers / assistive technologies.

With ARIA, you're adding extra information about "what is this thing,
what does it do, what's its current state" to otherwise neutral elements
in HTML. This information is then passed on to assistive technologies by
browsers.

Randomly, not sure how useful these are in isolation/without the actual
talk, but here are some slides I put together ages ago that hopefully
give a bit of context/introduction to what ARIA does, and some simple
examples.
