Geof,

JAWS application mode will be come more common as HTML5 and ARIA markup is used more and more on the web.

As developers continue to create more desktop type user interface controls on web, pages will need to use ARIA or HTML5 to describe the types and features of these web widgets and screen readers will need to support the markup to make these widgets accessible.

It would be nice for people using assistive technologies if web technologies would just stay the same, so assistive technology could become more stable and web developers more familiar with accessible design. But that is not the nature of the web, technologies will continue to evolve and new accessibility solution strategies will need to be developed and implemented. I wish there was an easy answer to your dilemma of needing to upgrade JAWS.

Jon
