"Essentially the idea will be to compile a list of Websites that are both
accessible and great looking. Get in touch if you have any opinions or
suggestions related to this idea."
Ok, I'm biased but I'd like to mention Nationwide's web site
(http://www.nationwide.co.uk). The pages were built graphically first -
PhotoShop mock-ups - which I then built to web standards using CSS/HTML (no
flash!) and included accessibility features at a template stage.
As a result, the site includes a number of features geared toward visually
impaired users including:
* Skip nav links
* good use of alt and title attributes
* noscript alternatives to scripted elements
* no drop-downlists being automatically triggered when used as navigation
(e.g. the Site Contents drop-down - you have to select then press go)
* clearly marked up tables (whether used for layout or data)
I, too, believe that an accessible web site does not need to be dull as
dishwater ... but all too often they are.
Please note: the *secure* banking section is not yet totally accessible, but
the plan of attack to sort that out has already been drafted, so it's only a
matter of time before that gets put right too.
